Cupcake Pops

To celebrate the birthday of a dear friend this weekend, I thought I would spend a morning baking cupcake pops. I got the idea from the blog Bakerella. A time-consuming, labor-intensive process that yielded delicious and super cute results! I did a pretty basic cupcake this time, but Bakerella has lots of ideas for more cute things you can do with mini cup (or otherwise) cakes!

California Breakfast

I woke up to thunder this morning and a rainy day ahead. Kasia is celebrating her birthday tonight and I got out of bed to look up a recipe and find what supplies I'd need for baking later this afternoon. Vince soon followed and asked "What's for breakfast?" I suggested a breakfast sandwich. Perhaps a strawberry smoothie to make good use of some fruit that was ready to go bad. Inspired by my California burger at yesterday's lunch, I popped a split English muffin in the toaster and got to work getting the guts of the sandwich ready! An egg, fried in an egg ring and yolk slightly broken, topped with pan-friend pancetta, a veggie sausage pattie and 1/4 of a softly broken up avocado. A sprinkle of kosher salt and grind of fresh pepper before topping the sandwich with the muffin top finished this quick and delicious start to the day. Ta-da!

I like them chewy.

At Organica, the name of the cafeteria, I mean, restaurant, at work, they have the best bagels I've ever eaten. New York City's included. My colleagues know how obsessed I am with these bagels and call me at my desk from Organica whenever it's Bagel Day at breakfast. A few weeks ago, the head chef, Peggy Baker (yes, her last name really is Baker) approached me while I filled my teacup and asked if I had read the article in the Sunday paper on bagels. "No" I replied. Well wait just a minute she instructed, went back to her office, and returned, wielding the newspaper section. "Does the recipe look legitimate?" I asked. Peggy said it looked like a pretty good recipe.

So, this Sunday, I decided to give it a shot.

Cosmos for Valentine's Day or the Skinny Jeans

This post is not so much about food as it is about my adventures in Block E the Saturday prior to Valentine's Day.

Between my second and third course at Cosmos at Graves 601, I decided to take a trip to the ladies' room. "Go before the food gets here!" my husband quipped. Well lo and behold, the restrooms in the restaurant were out of order and I was instructed to take the elevator up to the fifth floor and use the restroom there. So up I went. All of the bathroom events went just as planned, but as I returned to the elevator lobby on the fifth floor, the Eastview High School Girls' basketball team (or some other sport - I really wasn't paying attention to the patches on the letter jackets all 50 of them were wearing) had clustered in front of each and every elevator (as well as in the hallway leading to the lobby) and the wait for my trip back to the restaurant was looking longer than I had hoped. A gal who exited the bathroom right behind me verbalized my thoughts and suggested we might use one of the three stairwells within view.

I was a bit wary of using a stairwell for fear of setting off a fire alarm, but there were no signs warning us of emergency-exit-only or alarmed doors to be seen. This girl and I randomly picked a door and pushed. No luck; it was locked. We chose another door and pushed - it opened! So into the stairwell we went. Now we probably should have had one of us stay behind to hold the door open just in case the doors below refused to open, but I had consumed a cocktail and glass (or two?) of Shafer One Point Five with my meal thus far and my new friend would tell me later that she was at Bradstreet Crafthouse with her boyfriend, celebrating Valentine's Day, most likely having had a few herself. We were both a little under the influence and probably not thinking as clearly as we normally would be!

Well you can predict that we got stuck/trapped in this stairwell. We stopped at every floor, desperately pounding on each door (except for the one that said "ROOF ACCESS") but to no avail. Finally, a set of double doors looked a little promising than the rest. There was a 1-inch gap between the doors..."We're in the Block E movie theater!" Thank goodness a movie was just getting out, because a steady stream of people were walking right towards us...and then taking a right turn. Damn it! I grabbed the handles and shook the doors as hard as I could (they were still latched shut and locked), hysterically screaming "Help me!" through the 1-inch gap. A kind samaritan finally heard me or saw the doors and was able to let us out. I'm sure he thought we were absolutely out of our minds. We walked out, only to be approached by a security guard who asked us if we had our tickets. We tried calmly to explain our situation to him...dinner at the hotel...bathrooms out of order...fifth floor...girls' basketball team...not seeing a movie...

We finally made it back, but not first without introducing ourselves. My new friend Mandy and I parted ways at the first floor elevator lobby in the Graves and wished each other a Happy Valentine's Day. When I returned to our table (a good 20 minutes later), Vince needed to use the restroom. While he was away (just for a short moment really) our waiter, in his frantic French accent, told us that we were "driving the chefs crazy!" Vince told me that the food had come out but had to go back into the kitchen because it was getting cold. He also told me that he was wondering where the f*ck I could be, thinking I must have crapped in my pants. That my damn skinny jeans couldn't hold in my turd. (It was a #1 actually.) Wondering what he was going to do now.

As we left the restaurant, I briefed the hostess on my adventure. She apologized profusely and shared that it's one of the first things they're told when they start working there. "Never enter a stairwell because you'll end up at the Hard Rock Cafe!" The whole debacle really made for an exceptionally memorable Valentine's Day and the series of unfortunate events really overshadowed anything we ate at Cosmos that night.

Restaurant Alma

Friday evening, we wrapped up a long week withe date night at Restaurant Alma in Minneapolis. I can't believe the restaurant has been in business for over ten years (well, yes, I can, considering how good the fare is) but I've only known about it for six. Restaurant Alma is where Vince and I had our first "non-date" in May 2006 and where he proposed in August 2008! It goes without saying that this place is very special to us! The food never disappoints - it consistently wows - and we really like the comfortable and cozy atmosphere.

We began with a bottle of Patrick Javillier Pernand-Vergelesses, 06, Burgundy $85.

And each opted for the tasting menu at $45.

Vince:
Squid & Chickpea Salad
black kale, sofrito, spanish chorizo

Crispy Sweetbreads
marinated egg noodles & shitakes, scallion, egg-truffle sauce

Pork
Sadly, I can't remember specifics for this one, other than that there was a homemade hoisin sauce on the plate. The dish isn't on their (always updated) website!

Me:
Warm Corn Crepe
spicy chard, guajillo sauce, sour cream

Beet & Farro Risotto
parmigiano, crispy shiitakes, black truffle oil

Duck (two ways)
Again from memory: seared duck breast and (the most amazing) duck sausage. Quince, sweet potatoes. Amazing. Forget pork sausage. I want duck.

We ended with:
Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding
butterscotch anglaise, caramelized bananas, whipped cream $8.

Ours was certainl
y not a cheap date at just under $200 without tax and tip, but I think this is one of the best dining values in the Twin Cities. What you get for your money is amazing! There are by-the-glass options on the wine menu and all of the items are available a la carte.

Patrick's

Tonight, hubby and I dined at Patrick's in Edina. We were in the mood for a quiet and no-fuss dinner and correctly predicted that Patrick's would hit the spot! They offer full service at dinner Friday-Sunday and upon entering were seated at a cozy table in the back. I ordered a bouchée à la reine and Vince had the coq au vin. Both were mouth-wateringly delicious! To round out the meal, we ended ordering two desserts, a vanilla éclair for me and a crème brûlée for Vince.

Patrick's is where I go when I am missing the patisseries of Paris. Granted it's in a strip mall in suburbia, but when you walk in, you are greeted by glass cases of pastries, breads and macarons in bright pastel hues. Macarons!!! I can't find them anywhere else in Minnesota. The first time I had them was at Ladurée on the Champs-Élysées in Paris and seeing them now brings up fond memories.

batter scoop

Did a bit of baking this weekend in preparation of a cookie exchange I hosted on Sunday! I love using a small ice cream scoop to portion out cookie batter or dough. It makes for nice, uniform cookies! Here's the original recipe. I modified it a bit...

Ingredients
  1. Preheat oven to 350F
  2. In a mixing bowl and using an electric mixer, combine butter, flour, icing sugar and vanilla extract; mix until mixture is a smooth consistency.
  3. Prepare cookie sheets with parchment paper.
  4. Spoon out dough onto parchment lined cookie sheets by teaspoonfuls or by tablespoons for larger cookies, spacing about 2 inches apart.
  5. Depress each scoop with your finger and fill with jam or preserves.
  6. Bake for 12 minutes.
  7. Allow to cool on a cooling rack before eating.
